Drop Biscuits and Sausage Gravy
For the Biscuits:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter (1 stick), melted
  • 1 cup milk (can use buttermilk if preferred)
For the Gravy:
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2½ cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon dried rubbed sage
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper (we like pepper, you might start with ¼ teaspoon)
  • 1 teaspoon Frank's, optional (actually, this is not optional in my family!)
For the Biscuits:
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar and salt.
  3. Stir in the melted butter and milk until just combined.
  4. Drop by heaping tablespoons onto a lightly greased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake for 9-12 minutes until lightly browned.
For the Gravy:
  1. In a large skillet, over medium high heat, brown sausage.
  2. Turn the heat to medium and add the flour.
  3. Continue cooking for a minute.
  4. Slowly add the milk, rubbed sage, salt, pepper, and Frank's.
  5. Turn up the heat and bring to a simmer.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened.
  7. Spoon over biscuits and dig in!
