Today I’m going to change it up a little bit. I’m not sharing a dish for you to eat, but something that will make your house smell fantastic. If you were to stop by my house during the holiday season, chances are you would find a pot of this simmering on the stovetop. This recipe was in the paper back when we lived in Oklahoma 20 years ago. Dan and I were just young newlyweds back then! I’ve been making this ever since. I love the way this makes the house smell. I made my first batch the other day when I started decorating for Christmas.
Do you decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving? I generally do not. We usually host Thanksgiving and I want my house to look like fall. The day after, I’ll pull all the Christmas decorations out of the attic and spend the rest of the weekend decorating. This year we went out of town, and because of the weather didn’t make it back until Sunday. Needless to say, I got a little bit of a late start. On the bright side, I’m ahead on my Christmas shopping!
- 1-quart water
- ½ lemon
- ½ orange
- ¼ cup whole cloves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 3 bay leaves
- Combine all of the ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered as long as desired.
- Add water as necessary.
- The mixture can be stored covered in the refrigerator for several days.
Enjoy!
Kim
